What Does it Mean That the Holy Spirit Guides Us?

Guidance Into Truth

The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth, especially the truth about Jesus, his work, his teachings, and the gospel. This doesn’t mean the Spirit gives new revelation apart from Scripture, but that he illuminates our hearts and minds to understand the Scriptures (1 Cor. 2:12-14), convicting us of spiritual realities we could not comprehend on our own.

Convicting and Correcting

The Spirit reveals to us areas of sin, calls us to repentance, and helps us discern right from wrong. Sometimes this guidance is a gentle nudge; other times it is a deep conviction. He both corrects and refines us, making us more like Christ.

Daily Decisions and Direction

The Spirit guides us in our day-to-day living. This may come through a combination of prayer, wise counsel, Scripture, and internal promptings or a sense of peace. While we should always be cautious about subjective impressions, many testify to the Spirit’s quieter yet real guidance—a warning, a prompting to speak, serve, or act in love.
