North
Central Church began as Scenic Woods Assembly
of God under the ministry of Rev. and Mrs. Melvin
E. Lake in 1959. Worship Services were held in
a house for a few months until they moved into
a Civic Center near Mt. Houston and Homestead
Road.
Two lots were purchased on the corner of Homestead
Road and Sam Houston Street where a tent was erected
for services until a 50' x 50' flat top building
was constructed. In 1961, the name of the church
was changed to Northwood Assembly of God.
In 1965, Rev. and Mrs. Lake contacted Evangelists
Paul and Patricia Emerson about the prospect
of coming to pastor Northwood. After much prayer
and consideration, Rev. and Mrs. Emerson moved
to Houston and became pastors in May of 1965.
 |
Almost
immediately, the leadership realized the need
for more classroom space and a sanctuary.
In 1966, a new Sunday School wing was completed
and shortly after, a new sanctuary to serve
as a lighthouse to the community. |
Northwood
was growing rapidly and the leadership again realized
the need for bigger and better accomodations.
The two lots were insufficient to fulfill their
vision so the decision was made to relocate
and build a new church. Through prayer and fasting
the Lord provided 5 acres next to 3 acres
owned by Magnolia Gardens Assembly (formerly Calvary
Assembly founded by Rev. and Mrs. Earl Hogan),
under the leadership of Rev. and Mrs. Ernie Parker.
Northwood merged with Magnolia Gardens Assembly
and formed North Central Assembly of God.
| North
Central broke ground in 1979 on the first
of two initial building phases, the Educational
Wing. The first service was held in the new
facility in February, 1981. |
 |
 |
A
ground breaking service for the second building
phase (the Sanctuary) was held in the Spring
of 1983.
On January 27, 1985, the first service was held
in the new facility. |
Pastor
Emerson and the board of directors saw a need
for a final phase to the North Central campus
and in 1994 the Family Life Center was completed.
|
 |
 |
In
February of 2005, North Central voted to relocate
north of its present location and purchased
20 acres of undeveloped land on the corner
of Spring Creek Drive and Aldine Westfield
Road (12 miles north of its current facility). |
|
A
Ground Breaking ceremony was held on April
4, 2006, and by the end of the month, work
had begun on a new, forty thousand square
foot, first-phase building.
